Alice in Wonderland is opening in theatres in Singapore very soon, but is facing a bit of trouble elsewhere. Cinema group Odeon has said that it”ll boycott the film at its cinemas in Britain, Ireland and Italy in protest plans for an early release date on DVD.
Usually, a studio releases the DVD for a big blockbuster 17 weeks after its opening. But Disney is planning to cut it down to 12 weeks in Alice’s case. Of course, this is gonna hurt its theatrical run. The group had invested a lot of money in 3D technology in its theaters and it feels that Disney’s move undermines their efforts. The group also fears that the 12 week run could become commonplace.
But is boycotting the film and banning it a good move? I doubt it. This could face a lot of repercussions, with piracy being one of them.
Me, I’m just eagerly waiting for the film. I’ve always loved the Mad Hatter. Who can forget the tea party scene? And he has some of the quirkiest lines in the book. I can’t wait to see what Johnny Depp has done with the character.
